The sugar plants operate co-generation units to produce electricity . Bagasse which is a byproduct of the sugar plant is used to generate electricity and the deficit of bagasse is supplemented with coal. The power produced is used for the inhouse requirements and the excess power generated is exported to the power grid.
The Sakthi Sugars Limited has three Co-generation Power plants located at Sakthinagar, Sivaganga and Modakurichi in Tamil Nadu. The power generation capacity of all three cogeneration power plants put together is 92 MW.
Sri Chamundeswari Sugars Limited (SCSL) incorporated Co-Generation Power Plant in May 2006 and synchronized it with the Grid in April 2008. The power generation capacity of the plant is 26 MW. The Boiler for the power plant is being supplied by TBW Ltd and TG by SNM of Japan.
